Arnold Aprill's trip to Bahia, December 1999

In December 1999, Chicago artist Bernard Williams and CAPE director Arnold Aprill traveled to Salvador, Bahia to meet artist Denise Milan, to meet the teachers participating in the Salvador-Chicago exchange, to participate in the Latin American Cultural Market sponsored by Casa Via Magia, and to meet Rosa Iavelberg of the Brazilian Ministry of Education.

Bernard and Arnie fell in love with Brazil. While there, they met many extraordinary educators and artists from Brazil and from all over the world. This is the bay, for which the state of Bahia is named.

While attending the Cultural Market, Bernard and Arnold met amazing artists from El Warsha, an innovative theatre company from Cairo, Egypt, that integrates traditional Egyptian art forms into avant garde literary adaptations. Stick dancers from El Warsha went to visit Grupo Cultural Baguncaco, a cultural organization in Salvador that organizes young people in the community into highly professional tin can percussion bands. These photos show the Egyptian artists demonstrating their art, while the Brazilian young people performed capoeira, the martial arts/dance form developed in Bahia.
