Statement of Expectations Mrs. Leonard, Lincoln Park High School, Chicago

By using the internet as a means of transmitting and receiving information, students in Chicago will exchange cultural artifacts with Brazilian students, and respond to various art, literature, music, biological, and social science issues of Brazil. Through this exchange, it is hoped that students will discover common interests they share with their international counterparts. In addition to sharing responses to academic topics, Chicago students will also address other concerns with the Brazilian students. Some of these concerns include but may not be limited to: comparing popular societal, moral, and ethical issues in the two countries. The outcome of this cultural exchange will be a multifaceted wealth of knowledge gained about a new country through the perspective of fellow adolescents.
Objectives of the art component of the project are as follows:

• Students will discover links (similarities) between contemporary Brazilian artwork and that of Chicago.
• Students will discuss how the art of Brazil reflects issues of modern society.
• Students will discuss how the subject matter and painting styles of Brazilian painters compare to those of Chicago muralists.
• Students will identify some of the most popular artisitc periods/styles of Brazilian art in the 20th century.
