For My Students
To create is to know a special joy, whether in fashioning words into a poem
or story, composing a song, a painting, sculpture, dance, drama, or music. Those
who share that creation by viewing it or experiencing a performance, also know
that joy which expands and grows enormously. (Consider the recent popularity
of the Chicago
cow sculptures) In other words, both the artist and audience are touched
by the magic of creating an original art work. The love of learning fires such
creative efforts, and enlightens all those who pursue the arts.
One's life is enriched by engaging in the arts, both as creator and as spectator.
I want my students to become more knowledgeable in the universal language of
the arts, whatever genre. I want them to have the pleasure of knowing friends
across the seas. In sharing their lives through words, pictures, and photos,
Bahians and Chicagoans will realize more fully that we are all members of the
family of man. Our hopes, wishes, and dreams are similar, although our life
styles, native language and environment may vary. Learning about such cultural
differences and celebrating artistic achievements fuels the excitement of learning.
Through the wonders of electronic communication, one explores and is exhilarated
by the central themes, universal truths, and the uniqueness of the human spirit.
Art unites us, invites dialogue, and enlarges our understanding and vision.
We can share the cultural treasures of the centuries.
