Roosevelt University GEAR UP students and their families participated in kickoff activities, which included 4 field trips, for Science Chicago, a year long initiative to create a greater awareness of the sciences and science careers. Through the GEAR UP grant, Roosevelt University is helping two CPS neighborhood schools (John Hope College Preparatory High School and Hyde Park Academy) gain greater career awareness and readiness for college. Tapping into the Science Chicago field trips exposes students to a number of possible career choices helping them make better, more informed decisions about college.

At Argonne National Laboratories, students went behind the scenes for a demonstration of how scientists
explore and build models of proteins.
At The University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center, students learned about robotic surgery by practicing on the da Vinci surgical robot - the same robot that surgeons use to learn.
On a field trip to Jackson Park, students & teachers participated in Geocaching, an interactive high-tech treasure hunting game played with GPS devices - a fun way to learn about geographic coordinates & satellite technology.
At Lab Fest, held at The Museum of Science & Industry, parents & children explored over 50 special exhibits and demonstrations. The day ended with a visit to Antarctica at the Omnimax Theatre.
