August 2006 - Summer Academies are an important part of the GEAR UP initiative for both students and teachers.

Summer academies give students a chance to meet new friends, learn new skills, and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. These academically rich programs help students learn about careers and prepare for college.

Summer academies also provide teachers with unique professional development opportunities. During these summer academies, teachers try new techniques and strategies that they have learned at the Chicago GEAR UP Inquiry and Design Institute as well as other professional development opportunities that GEAR UP has sponsored.

The video above shows just one example of a rich and unique summer academy opportunity, where students participate in Experiencia's Exchange City program. In this intensive 5 day program, students learn about skills they will need for business and government.
