Exploring the Pythagorean Theorem on the Geoboard with TI-73's

Presented by: Darlene Whitkanack, Math Education Consultant

The Pythagorean Theorem is one of the most useful formulas from geometry used in algebra, whether to find the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle or the distance between two points.  We will use the TI-73, a calculator designed for middle school, and geoboards to make sense of the formula.  We will solve some interesting problems as we explore the concepts of length, area and square roots.

Can You Walk the Graph with a CBR or CBL?

We will use the Calculator Based Lab and Calculator Based Ranger with the TI-84’s to detect motion.  We can look at distance and velocity as we attempt to match the graphs with our movements. We’ll graph some of your favorite dance movements and try to find an algebraic expression for the steps, so wear your dancing shoes as well as your thinking caps.
