Chicago GEAR UP
My Voice, My Struggle, My Journey: Why Does Where I Come From Matter?

Presented by: Gladys Hansen-Guerra and Juan Manuel Lopez, Chicago Teachers' Center

Burro Genius, by Victor Villasenor, is a story of perseverance, alternative support systems and an educational journey that entails learning with the end in mind. This workshop will explore themes of multiple worlds, dual identities and cultural experiences. We will use excerpts from Burro Genius to examine the author's use of social experiences and informal/formal teaching methods, and pose thought-provoking questions that invite others to examine culture and how it shapes learning. The workshop incorporates journaling and discussion on how educators weave and cultivate positive learning communities. In a culminating project, participants create visual symbols as reflection pieces that define their own social and cultural identity.
