GEAR UP has summer programs for YOU!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the GEAR UP Transition to High School Program?

This is a free 4-week opportunity for incoming 9th graders into GEAR UP high schools, who are ineligible for CPS Bridge or Step Up, to participate in a summer program that will provide academic enrichment and high school success activities.

How do students sign up for the GEAR UP Transition to High School Program?

Students should visit http://www.etcchicago.com/stepup/start.asp to complete the Step Up application. Even though it is the Step Up website, student names will be sent on to GEAR UP to make sure you are attending a GEAR UP school. If students are unable to sign up online, they should fill out the form (English or Spanish) on the summer program page and hand it into the GEAR UP coordinator at your school.
What will students be doing during the Transition program? During the mornings, students will participate in academic enrichment activities in both reading and math. They'll spend time reading a book together that examines the lives of young people who have made differences in their communities, followed with work on projects that they think will change their own communities. Students will also participate in high school success activities. During the afternoon program (which takes place two days per week), students will join with Bridge and Step Up students to focus on college/career planning and activities leading to high school success. Field trips, such as college tours, will be taken to support the ideas learned.
Who will be with the students each day? At each school site, students will be taught and supported by a CPS math and English teacher, a high school counselor, college tutors, a Postsecondary Coach, parent advocates, and GEAR UP staff.
When does the program take place? The program will take place during the same dates and hours as the Step Up program at each GEAR UP high school. in most schools, the program will take place Monday - Friday from July 2 - July 27, 2007. Hours are from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm. You should contact your high school or your GEAR UP Coordinator for the specific dates and times.
