Workshop Description |
|||
Octavian and his beautiful mother, Princess Cassiopeia live in a mansion with a group of eccentric philosophers. Dressed in fine clothes, Octavian is taught Latin, mathematics, philosophy and music by members of the Novanglian College of Lucidity. As he grows older, Octavian comes to question his position in the household and to realize the sinister motivation behind his education. Set against the backdrop of the American Revolution, M.T. Anderson’s National Book Award-winning novel examines the conflict between liberty and commerce, science and prejudice. Using strategies that help students comprehend complex texts, the presenters will offer hands-on activities that demonstrate how issues of racial identity and privilege continue to shape our national character. |
