Karen Boran, Ed.D.
Leadership Coach in the High School Transformation project with CPS's Office of High School Programs. The former Director of Research and Evaluation for CTC, Karen has also served as Manager of Literacy for the Chicago Public Schools' 100 high schools and an Area Reading Coach. She lives in Skokie with her husband and two sons.
Gina Gamboa
Director of Bilingual Programs at CTC, working with teachers to develop further processes and practices that integrate art and culture to support bilingual and bicultural students’ literacy, and to ensure that positive self-awareness is represented in the curriculum.
Susan Garr, M. A.
Professional Development Specialist for the GEAR UP Mid Cluster. She has worked at CTC for the past 7 years. Prior to her work outside the classroom she taught 9th grade English at Roosevelt High School for 10 years.
Beatriz Jamaica
Program Manager at NEIU’s Chicago Teachers’ Center for the Cicero Berwyn Initiative for Educational Excellence. Beatriz works first-hand with parents and students, many of whom are recent immigrants. Through the various programs we offer, students and parents find their own voices and learn to tell their own stories.

Literacy Specialist at NEIU’s Chicago Teachers’ Center and Co-Director of the Young Adult Literature Conference. She is an MFA candidate in Poetry at Bennington Writing Seminars
Mary Massie, Ed.D.
Co-director and one of the original creators of the YAL Conference. A Professional Development Specialist in GEAR UP South and ARDDP, she is delighted to offer an arts-oriented workshop, drawing on theatre skills from an MFA in Acting/Dramatic Criticism and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.
Polly Mills
Certified at the Master Candidate level in the Story Workshopâ approach to the teaching of writing. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Creative Writing and the Teaching of Writing from Columbia College Chicago and is an award-winning fiction writer. She is a member of the creative writing faculty at Columbia College. Through the GEAR UP grant, she supports teachers and their students in the Chicago Public Schools.
April Nauman, PhD
Associate Professor of Reading at Northeastern Illinois University. She is the author of Scorch, a novel, and several award-winning short stories.
Tina Peano
A former English teacher at Best Practice High School, a pioneering institution where inquiry, collaborative teaching and learning, and integrated units were a way of life. She is currently a literacy coach for National Louis University's Center for City Schools and the Literacy Consultant for the Chicago History Fair
Beverly Rowls, M. S.
Ms. Rowls has provided professional development support to Chicago and Illinois teachers in the area of K-12 classroom literacy instruction for nearly ten years. She has taught reading and other courses and workshops at several Chicago universities and organizations. An avid reader and student, Beverly enjoys historical fiction, adventure and science fiction.
Germania Solorzano
Professional Development Specialist at the Chicago Teachers’ Center where she focuses on helping students to discover their own writing voices. She is also adjunct faculty in Columbia College Chicago’s Fiction Writing Department where she was trained in the Story Workshop Approach to the Teaching of Writing®.

Parent coordinator for the GEAR UP South Cluster for Northeastern Illinois University's Chicago Teachers' Center. With over 25 years of experience in the private and public sectors, she is a seasoned facilitator of diversity strategies and has presented at numerous national conferences. She co-facilitated "The Bluest Eye" at previous YAL Conference.
Katie Welsh, M. A.
Lead Literacy Teacher at Ames Middle School since 2004. She is dedicated to providing literacy support to her teachers in all content areas. This will be her first time as a member of the YAL presenter team. Katie enjoys reading for fun, running and yoga.
