African Folk Tales More than 20 entertaining stories, each with its own special meaning.

African Timelines  Very complete and complex timelines that briefly tell the whole history of Africa since the dawn of man.  There are many embedded links to take you to more complete discussions of the topics discussed.

AIDS in Africa   AIDS has already taken more lives than slavery.  It is a horror which we need to understand.  Among its most pitiable results is the creation of millions of orphans.

The Countries of Africa   All the countries of Africa are listed here with information about their geography, languages, customs and history.

And -- More Countries of Africa   It's nice to have a choice and you might just prefer this to the one above. It lists fewer countries, but its maps are better and the information seems to be better organized. It has a reading level aimed, probably, at high school and above.

Current African Affairs   Sources of up-to-date information on Africa, including radio programs you can listen to.

South Africa's Struggle against Apartheid  Presented as a complex story that ends in the question "Can a country overcome its history?"

Wonders of the African World    A wonderful, encyclopedic collection of sites developed by us around Henry Louis Gates, Jr.'s splendid PBS special by that name.  This site is so rich and complex that there is virtually nothing in the history or culture of Africa it does not touch.  Plan to spend a while here; your attention will be rewarded.

Early Civilizations of Africa  This site includes information about the early kingdoms of southern Africa, as well as Egypt and the Sudan.  Such information is hard to find on the web.

Ancient Nubia   This is an introduction to the people who lived south of Egypt in Ancient times and whose civilization reached reached a very high point.  It was created by a team of students as part of the Thinkquest contest, an event that you could take part in, too.

The Digital Librarian: Africana A huge list of sites with an emphasis on contemporary problems but something of everything else as well.

Discover Africa  Great maps and short histories of many African countries.

Key Moments in Tribal Life  A lovely series showing the events and rituals characterizing the life of a "typical" tribal African from birth through initiation, leadership and death.  It is the most interesting part of the University of Iowa's Art and Life in Africa.
