E-Mail Use

Getting Started on Macs:

1. Click on the Apple Menu, which you'll find in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.

2. Select Internet Applications

5. Enter the host name, cuip.uchicago.edu

6. Click Connect.

7. In the field labeled user name, type your user name, which proceeds the "@" sign in your e-mail address.  For instance, in the e-mail address christie@cuip.uchicago.edu, the user name is christie.

8. Enter your password in the password field.

9. Hit Return or click Login

Getting Started on PCs:

2. Select Run....

3. Type telnet.  Hit Return or click OK.

4. Using the mouse, select Connect.

5. Select Remote System.

6. In the field labeled Host Name, enter cuip.uchicago.edu.

7. Click Connect or hit Return.

8. In the field labeled login, type your user name, which proceeds the "@" sign in your e-mail address.  For instance, in the e-mail address christie@cuip.uchicago.edu, the user name is christie.

9. Enter your password in the Password field.

10. Hit Return.

Using Pine:

1. When prompted for login, type your user name.  Hit Return

2. Next you'll be prompted for your password.  Enter it and hit Return.  *Note*  To keep the passwords confidential, characters will not appear in the password field as you type.

3. At the next prompt, type pine.  This will bring up the Pine Main Menu from which you will be working.

Composing Messages:

1. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, scroll up to the option Compose Message, and hit Return.  Or simply type C.  This will bring you to the New Message window.

2. In the To: field, type the e-mail address of the person to whom you are writing.  For instance, clthomas@midway.uchicago.edu.  Hit Return

3. If you want to carbon copy another person, you can type their email address in the Cc: field.  Hit Return

4. In the Subject: field, type a subject for your message.  This is useful so that someone glancing through their e-mail messages will easily be able to identify the one they're looking for, and so they know in advance the nature of the message.  For instance, if you're e-mailing someone about rescheduling lunch on Friday, you might want to call the message "Friday's lunch" or "I need to reschedule".  Hit Return

5. In the area labeled Message Text, type the body of your message.

6. To send the message, hold down the Control key on your keyboard while hitting the X key.

7. The next prompt will read Send Message?.  Hit the Y key for yes.  If you made a mistake and do not want to send the message, hit N for no.  To cancel the message entirely, hold down Control while also pressing C for cancel.

Reading Messages:

1. Your messages are located in folders on Pine.  There are three pre-set folders, which are the basics you will need.  To access your Inbox, in which your new messages are located, you will first need to access the Folder List

2. From the Pine Main Menu, select Folder List by using the arrow keys to scroll, and then hit Return.  Or simply press the L key.

3. This will bring you to the pre-set folders, Inbox, sent-mail, and saved-messages.  To access your new mail, use the arrow keys to highlight Inbox, and press Return

4. Any new messages will be listed in the Inbox.  To access a message, select it with the arrow keys and hit Return.  The text of the message will then be displayed.

Creating Folders:

1. You may wish to customize your folders by creating more than the three pre-set ones.  From the Main Menu, select Folder List by scrolling to it with the arrow keys and hitting Return, or by simply pressing the L key.

2. Once in the Folder List, press A to Add a folder.

3. Type the name of the folder you want to add.

4. Hit Return.

Transferring Messages to Folders:

1. Select the message you want to transfer.

2. Press O for Other Commands.

3. Press S for Save.

4. Type the name of the folder to which you'd like to transfer the message, and hit Return.  If you don't know the name of the folder, hold down Control while pressing T to see the Folder List.  Use the arrow keys to select the folder you want, and hit Return or S for Select.

5. Hit Return to accept.

*Note* You can also create Directories, which are types of folders that can hold other folders.  Follow the same steps as Creating Folders above, except rather than typing a folder name to add, hold down Control while pressing X to create a Directory.

Quitting Pine:

1. Access the Pine Main Menu by hitting the M key.

2. From the Main Menu, use the arrow keys to select Quit, then hit Return.  Or simply hit the Q key.

3. The prompt will ask Really quit pine?.  Use the Y key for yes and the N key for no (if you've made a mistake).

4. Finally, type exit at the prompt.
