BUCKINGHAM FOUNTAIN
Located in the heart of Grant Park, Buckingham Fountain
is one of Chicago's
most popular summer attractions. Buckingham is one of the largest
fountain
in the world, with 133 jets spraying 14,000 gallons of water per minute
as high
as 135 feet in the air. A computer controls the entire display, including
the
dazzling colored light show that takes place nightly from 9 p.m. to 11
p.m.
Music has beeen added in 1999 to play along with some displays.
Buckingham Fountain has benefits other than entertainment—it's a
good place to cool off on hot and muggy afternoons. Employees frequently
flock
here for a lunchtime escape from the office.
Skateboarders, skaters and cyclists, once welcome near the fountain,
have been officially banned due to damage to the stone and concrete stairs.
Be careful—police still patrol for such activities and will ticket offenders.
