January 13, 1979  -  Second paralyzing snowstorm within two weeks hits Chicago. The
                    snowstorm of 1979 dropped 20.7 inches of snow on the Chicago area -- on top of about 8
                    inches that had fallen less than two weeks before.

anuary 26-27, 1967  -  Chicago's single biggest snowstorm fell for
                    twenty-nine hours and left 23 inches of snow (18.1 inches in the first
                    twenty-four hours). It paralyzed the city, left strings of autos
                    abandoned on the roads, and cost the city $5 million to plow.

                    February 27, 1979  -  Jane Byrne elected mayor, stunning the Regular
                    Democratic Organization and most of the city.

                    March 4, 1837  -  Chicago incorporated as a city, with a population of
                    4,170.

                    March 4, 1978  -  Chicago Daily News, the last afternoon paper in
                    Chicago, folds. Ironically, the most popular song at that time was
                    "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees.

                    March 6, 1933  -  Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak fatally shot by a bullet
                    meant for President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

                    April 5, 1955  -  Richard J. Daley elected Mayor.
 

June 14, 1998  -  Michael Jordan knocks down the clutch
                    game-clinching jumper with 5.2 seconds remaining in the game and the
                    Chicago Bulls beat the Utah Jazz 87-86 in Game 6 of the 1198 NBA
                    Finals for their sixth NBA title.
 

February 22, 1983  -  Harold Washington elected Chicago's first black
                    mayor.
