Curriculum Guide
AIM
The purpose of this module is to provide students with a cultural comparison of the cities of Athens, Madrid, and Paris through the use of the internet as a research tool.

 
 RATIONALE
One of the main goals of foreign language study is to develop an understanding and appreciation of world cultures so that students can become effective participants in the international community.  One way of achieving this goal is through the study of the cultural centers of a country. 

 
AUDIENCE
The intended audience is high school students enrolled in Greek, Spanish, and/or French classes.  Because the text is in English, the module is directed primarily to beginning language students.  However, advanced students could use the site for cultural information and could also select language specific texts referred to along the tour.

 
SUBJECT MATTER
The tour will include a brief historical overview of each city as well as a taste of the foods, arts, and commercial attractions specific to each country.  There is also a tourist language guide to equip students with basic words and phrases in each language and a reference to a site where students can locate a key pal in the cities studied.

 
OBJECTIVES
Students will: 
- describe the origins and historical development of each city 
- identify food specialties and customs of each city 
- identify major art works in the museums of each city
- describe and critique a major attraction in each city
- convert currencies from dollars to drachmas, pesetas, and francs
- convert clothing and shoe sizes from U.S. system to system used in each country
- identify artifacts and products made in each country
- expand language usage through the tourist language guide
- communicate with a keypal in one of the cities

 
MATERIALS
Computers with access to the internet
Student portfolio for storing activity results

 
INSTRUCTIONAL 
PLAN
Teacher's role:

- introduce module and expectations
- collaborate with technology coordinator
- set up the project center and resources
- provide technical assistance
- facilitate student projects

Student's role:

After completing each section of the tour the student is to complete the following activities:
 
- History unit: email teacher to describe the origins and historical development of the 3 cities
- Food unit: create an international menu from the web sites visited
- Arts unit: a. create a collage of art works from museums visited
b. write a review of an event or attraction
- Shopping: a. develop a list of souvenirs which are representative of the products or artifacts produced in each country each city
b. show sizes and currency  conversions.
- Keypal: write a profile of keypal using information gleaned from email 
- Travlang: develop a dialogue to purchase or order something, using one of the languages of the cities studied.

 ASSESSMENT
Student work

Each project will be evaluated as it is completed and filed in student portfolio.  Each student will complete all 6 activities. 

Project evaluation

a.  Teacher will review and assess the quality of the student work to determine the 
     effectiveness of the module.

b.  Students will evaluate module using a teacher developed evaluation form.
     Students will be asked to rate each aspect of the module with respect to content and
     ease of navigation.
