The purpose of this module is to provide students with a cultural comparison of the cities of Athens, Madrid, and Paris through the use of the internet as a research tool. |
One of the main goals of foreign language study is to develop an understanding and appreciation of world cultures so that students can become effective participants in the international community. One way of achieving this goal is through the study of the cultural centers of a country. |
The intended audience is high school students enrolled in Greek, Spanish, and/or French classes. Because the text is in English, the module is directed primarily to beginning language students. However, advanced students could use the site for cultural information and could also select language specific texts referred to along the tour. |
The tour will include a brief historical overview of each city as well as a taste of the foods, arts, and commercial attractions specific to each country. There is also a tourist language guide to equip students with basic words and phrases in each language and a reference to a site where students can locate a key pal in the cities studied. |
Students will:
- describe the origins and historical development of each city - identify food specialties and customs of each city - identify major art works in the museums of each city - describe and critique a major attraction in each city - convert currencies from dollars to drachmas, pesetas, and francs - convert clothing and shoe sizes from U.S. system to system used in each country - identify artifacts and products made in each country - expand language usage through the tourist language guide - communicate with a keypal in one of the cities |
