þÿHello Revere friends: We left the lobster town of Cutler and headed out to a little island with a lighthouse. Machais Seal Island is little more than a rock sticking up out of the ocean a few miles offshore. It is home to a large colony of Puffins. Many other seabirds nest there, but Puffins are the main event. Funny thing about this island-both the Canadian Government and the United States Government claims it as their own. The Canadians occupy it though and they maintain the lighthouse. It was too rough to make a landing so we circled it with the dinghy and took pictures. Lots of seals, Arctic Terns, Cormorants and North Atlantic Seagulls. Must be a lot of fish around the island because that's all the Seals and Birds eat. When we approached the landing someone came down from the lighthouse to tell us that if it was tomorrow he couldn't let us land, the island would be closed. Wasn't that dumb? It was today not tomorrow. Not too long ago the American tour boat operator from Machias landed here and ran the American flag up their pole. A hundred years ago that could have started a war-not today, the Canadians are good friends and nice people. Hope you enjoy the pictures of their (our) island.
