Campobello Island, Canada

I have always wanted to come to Campobello Island, Canada. It was the summer home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, our 36th President. This is where the President was stricken with polio, he was crippled for the rest of his life.

The Roosevelt house had 32 rooms. It is kept today in the same condition that it was in the early 1900's when the President summered there. All of the same furniture, children's toys, stove and oven-it all looks as though the Roosevelts are expected at any time now. For me, it was a sort of pilgrimage. During the great depression I was a student at Paul Revere and FDR would give "Fireside Chats" over the radio, telling us how things were going to get better. Pearl Harbor was bombed the year I graduated. Roosevelt was a great leader.

There are a number of wonderful Public Television films about Roosevelt, some showing Campobello. You'll have to get along with my pictures for now.
