For this activity you will need several leaves of different sizes, paper, and crayons or chalk. Put a sheet of paper (thin paper is best) on top of one of your leaves. Hold the paper and the leaf still with one hand. Lightly color the paper over the leaf. What do you see happening on the paper? Often fossils are images of where a plant or animal was. What you have made should look lot like the leaf fossil at the top of the page. If it does not, try again. Be sure not to press down too hard with the crayon. You are making rubbings of the leaf. Making rubbings is one way to record what something looks like. What are some other ways? What are some other objects you
could make rubbings of?
