What is Sand Made of?

Materials:  For this activity you will need sand, clear tape, a magnifying glass, paper, and markers or crayons.

Procedure:  Put the sticky side of the tape down onto the sand so that the sand sticks to it.  Now put your tape on the paper and look at the sand through the magnifying glass.

Observations:  Using the crayons or markers, draw on the paper what you see.

What shapes do you see?

What colors do you see?

Think about sandpaper.  Is sandpaper rough or smooth?  Can you figure out why it feels that way?

Pick up some of the sand and rub it between your first two fingers and your thumb.

Conclusion:  What do you think sand is made of?
