Etta
Moten Barnett
Description
Etta Moten Barnett lived
and worked during the height of the Harlem Renaissance. In this activity,
students will use the Internet to research the
contributions of other African-Americans who influenced this important
period of American history. This activity should be used during two
class periods.
Objectives
Students should:
-
recognize the names and contributions
of African-Americans during
the Harlem Renaissance
-
use internet search engines
to gain information about assigned topics
-
report their findings to the
class
-
create crossword puzzles using
PuzzleMaker
Procedure
-
Ask students what they know
about the Harlem Renaissance. When did it take place? Who was
involved? List student responses on the board/overhead transparency.
(If needed, direct students to the Harlem
Renaissance link on the Student Activity Page.)
-
Students read excerpt
of Barnett's interview on the Student Activity Page. Barnett said,
"I knew those folks that you read about for the Harlem Renaissance."
Students may also view the "Importance of African-American History" and/or
"W.E.B. DuBois" video downloads of Barnett on The
HistoryMakers website.
-
From the list on the board/overhead
transparency, assign each student one person who contributed to the Harlem
Renaissance. The following names were mentioned by Barnett during
her interview. Of course, there are several more.
-
Sidney Poitier
-
Cab Calloway
-
Maya Angelou
-
Zora Neale Hurston
-
Langston Hughes
-
Marcus Gravey
-
W.E.B. DuBois
-
Marian Anderson
-
Using the Internet Search Engines
for 5-10 minutes, students locate the major contributions of their assigned
person.
-
Students report their findings
to the class as classmates complete this worksheet.
(You will want to print and photocopy the worksheet
before beginning the activity.)
-
Using completed worksheets,
students create crosswords puzzles on the PuzzleMaker
website.
-
After puzzles are printed, students
exchange and complete puzzles.
