CONGRATULATIONS!  You are well on your way to learning more about Vernon Jarrett and the contributions of African-Americans to the history of Chicago.  Compare your answers with the ones below and then discuss the answers in class.
 

1.    Vernon Jarrett is a prominent journalist/commentator/columnist.

2.    He began his journalism career in Chicago with the Chicago Defender.

3.    The Chicago Defender is one of the nation's oldest African-American newspapers.  The paper is published in
       Chicago.

4.    The Negro Newsfront was the nation's first daily radio newscast created by African-Americans.

5.    Vernon Jarrett was the first African-American syndicated (his articles were sold to several different newspapers
        for publishing) columnist for the Chicago Tribune.

6.    The ACT-SO program was created by Vernon Jarrett and is sponsored by the NAACP.  ACT-SO and is an acronym
        for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics. The program encourages high academic and
        cultural achievement among African-American high school students.
