Activity 6: From Negro History Week  to Black History Month Teacher Instructions

Description

Students will click on the picture of Vernon Jarrett on the activity page to learn about the origins of Negro History Week and Black History Month.  Students will discuss Black History month as it exists today and begin creating projects for a Black History Month celebration.

Objectives

Students should:

• Consider how Black History month got started and why
• Discuss Black History Month as it exists today
• Develop ideas for its celebration
• Plan and create schedules and projects for the celebration

1.    Ask students if they know how Black History Month got started and why?

2.    Proceed with a discussion.

3.    Share with the class an old history textbook with very little information or misinformation about the African-American
       contribution to our nation.

4.    Have students click on the picture of Vernon Jarrett to hear his discussion of the issue.

5.    Have students focus on the following questions about Black History Month:

• How is Black History Month celebrated in your school?

 
• How important is Black History Month to you?

 
• Is there a connection between the way you feel and the way it is celebrated in your school?

 
• How important do you think it is to Vernon Jarrett?  Why?

 
• Imagine that you are in charge of events planning for the yearly Black History Month celebration at your school.  What ideas would you implement?

 
• Has this lesson inspired you to learn more about African-Americans who have contributed to our nation?
