Aims
The
aim of this unit is for students to learn about the contributions of African-Americans
to history.
Rationale
In
today's society, Hollywood and sports superstars often outshine real history
makers. The HistoryMakers, is a website that chronicles the biographies
and testimonials of African-American art, business, civic, entertainment,
law, media, music, political, and religion makers--real history makers.
It presents role models who have achieved academic success and made positive
contributions to society despite personal and social obstacles. Although
The HistoryMakers is plentiful in content, it does not contain a curriculum.
This unit is divided into two modules: Vernon Jarrett and Etta Moten Barnett. Each module contains specific lessons which will not only broaden the students' knowledge of the topic, but also enhance other language arts and humanity skills. For example, when studying Vernon Jarrett, students will research Jim Crow laws and write historic persuasive essays about why the laws should be abolished.
