The week before students begin working with Little Red Riding Hood, ask the parents to allow each child to bring in a picture of their grandmother.  On the first day, set up a bulletin board titled, "Grandmother's Love."  Have each student draw one thing they like to do at Grandmother's house.  Display both illustrations and grandmother's picture on the board .  Explain that Little Red Riding Hood loved her grandmother and always looked forward to visiting her.

Using read aloud strategies, introduce the book, Little Red Riding Hood.  Emphasize the front of the book and the books title.  Again you can utilize prior knowledge by brining in their relationship with their grandmothers.  When the discussion is over, explain in simple language what Red Riding Hood is about.

Begin the next activity by doing a picture walk.  It is very important for students who have difficulty with the concepts of reading to see the text and picture structure . Emphasize repeated structure  size and shape of the text.  During the picture walk, chose two words that have importance to tasks presented .  These words can be used in word wall activities .   Words will also be emphasized when using their interactive writing and reader response logs.  Begin reading to the class using whole group read aloud strategies.
