Thetransition to high school is an important component of academic success. Too often, teachers assume students enter high school prepared to learn specific facts in content areas. In many cases though, students DON'T HAVE A CLUEabout how to study effectively!
A structurally developed Study Skills Program is an essential resource that will enable students to achieve academic success as they undertake rigorous core curriculum requirements that are driven by the national reform movement. In order to meet these national standards and graduation requirements, we must strengthen the academic skills of our students.
Research shows that a program of study skills can be taught. The most effective way to teach such skills is through the context of subject content areas. The infusion of such skills into core subject areas provides an excellent opportunity to learn and practice these skills as they relate to specific content lessons. Study skills techniques will provide students with a repertoire of strategies that can increase the ability to succeed in school and the world of work. The infusion and introduction of the Study Skills Program into the curriculum provides students with the support required for the achievement of academic success. As decision-makers continue to raise the bar on student achievement, it becomes imperative that educators provide support mechanisms within content curriculum.
