URVEY-getting an overall picture of what you're going to study before you actually begin!

  1. 1. Read the title-help your mind prepare to receive the subject!
  2. 2. Read the introduction/summary-focus on the author's statement of important points!
  3. 3. Notice boldface headings and sub-headings-organize your mind before you begin to read-outlines a structure for details to come!
  4. 4. Notice all graphics-charts, maps, diagrams and illustrations are there to make a point-don't miss them!
  5. 5. Notice all reading aids-italic and boldface print, chapter objectives and end-of-chapter questions are there to help you comprehend!
UESTION-asking questions for learning; helping your mind "lock-on" and concentrate;
  1. 1. The important things to learn are usually the answers to your questions!
  2. 2. Questions should lead to emphasis on the what, why, how, when and where of study content!
  3. 3. Ask yourself questions as you read or study the material!
  4. 4. Answer your own questions to make sense of the material!
  5. 5. Answer your questions to make the material more impressionable!
  6. 6. Ask questions and answer them to make the material more meaningful and easier to remember!
  7. 7. Write questions in the margins of your notebook, or wherever you'll easily notice it later!
EAD-reading actively fills in the information to the mental images you've been creating!
  1. 1. Read to answer the questions you've asked yourself!
  2. 2. Read to answer the questions your teacher has asked!
  3. 3. Be alert to bold or italicized print! They mean special emphasis has been connected to those words!
  4. 4. Be alert to charts, maps, graphs and illustrations; they often convey ideas more powerfully than text!
ECITE-halting the reading process to recall what you've read; training your mind to learn as it reads!
  1. 1. Recall those main headings!
  2. 2. Recall those important ideas or concepts printed in bold or italicized type!
  3. 3. Recall those charts, maps, graphs and illustrations and their significance!
  4. 4. Develop an overall picture of what you've read in your own words/thoughts!
  5. 5. Connect what you've just read to the things you already know!
  6. 6. Don't go to another section until you can recite/recall what you've just studied!
EVIEW-reviewing what you've studied to build your memory strength and refine your mental organization!
  1. 1. Review when you've finished studying!
  2. 2. Go back over all of your questions from the bold and italicized headings!
  3. 3. Go back over all of your questions from the charts, maps, graphs and illustrations!
  4. 4. Re-read with the objective to measure what you've gained from the study process!
  5. 5. Scan your notes to clarify missed points or things you don't yet quite understand!
  6. 6 Do a final review before a test or exam!
  7. 7. Don't wait until the last minute to begin a thorough review!
