Introduction
High school students must cope
with increased academic standards in order to meet high school graduation
requirements. Current requirements can be achieved through exposure to
a study skills curriculum. Completion of these web site modules will enable
students to develop strategies for performing successfully under the new,
rigorous educational standards.
Aim
This curriculum is designed for all new
and returning members of the entire Kenwood Academy learning community.
Students will be introduced to this program through their advisory period.
Participants will utilize this curriculum guide to decrease the failure
rate.
Rationale
Kewood seeks to reduce the school-wide failure
rate. Mastery of study skills techniques will decrease the drop-out rate
and increase the graduation rate. Students will benefit from developing
effective study skills in order to become life-long independent learners.
Goals:
Students will be able to:

Manage time and environment.

Develop reading skills.
-
Listen and take notes.
-
Formulate test-taking strategies.
-
Identify and utilize appropriate resources.
Objectives:

Students will prioritize
and rank daily activities.
-
Students will develop a study schedule for home
and school use.

Students will maintain an assignment notebook
to record all homework and project due dates.
-
Students will apply texbook organization concepts
to understand materials presented in subject area textbooks.
-
Students will apply basic textbook vocabulary
such as: chapters, topic headings, subheadings, introductions and summaries
to gain further information in textbooks.

Students will vocabulary building skills.
-
Students will exhibit mastery of the SQ3R method.
-
Students will demonstrate specific strategies
for taking objective, problem-solving and essay tests.
-
Students will demonstrate an awarness of tutorial,
Internet and library resources in the school and community.
Audience:
This curriculum has been designed for Kenwood
Academy students, parents and faculty members.
Prerequisites:
This curriculum module has been designed
for currently enrolled Kenwood Academy students, their parents and faculty
members. This curriculum plan assumes no prior mastery of study skill techniques.
Subject Matter:
Students will participate in the following
study skill modules:

Introduction to learning styles.

Management of time and environment.

Improvement of reading skills.
-
Mastery of listening and note taking.
-
Enhancement of test taking skills.
-
Improved use of Internet and printed resource
materials.

Vocabulary.
Instructional Plan

Inservice faculty
-
Administer learning styles inventory to students
and teachers.

Instruct students in the proper use of an assignment
book/planner.

Formulate study groups
-
Require students to create a daily study schedule.

Require students to maintain a notebook with
graded assignments and notes.

Engage students in textbook analysis and exploration
activities.

Familiarze students with the SQ3R Method.

Provide hands-on activities that will expand
and guage their listening acuity.

Develop specific strategies for essay and objective
