Hi, my name
is Data Whale and I will guide your students through a module on data collection
and graphing. I will there to guide them step by step. Finally, they will
make graphs to show what they have learned by using data collected from
research on whales.
I recommend first introducing or reviewing the concept
prior to them beginning the module. I have included some lessons you might
want to use.
LESSON PLANS
Collecting Data
Purpose: To collect data and organize data
Students will
First, introduce the goal of the lesson to students and
vocabulary. They will label the table ( Type of Button/Tally/Frequency).
Have students to separate the buttons according to type and count them.
They will use tally marks to record the amounts and write numbers in the
frequency column. Finally have the students to make up a question that
a classmate could answer by interpreting the data in his table. Let them
share their questions with a partner.
Understanding Pictographs
Purpose: To interpret a pictograph
Students will
Introduce the vocabulary and the learning goal. Have students
open their candy and separate the colors. Next, they will label their graph
according to the different colors of candy them have. Explain that the
key is equal to 2 pieces of candy. Have them to count the number of candy
pieces for each color and draw a picture to represent the amount of each
color. Finally, the best part lesson in eating the candy!
Assessment
Have students to organize some of the information they
collected on whales to make graphs and explain in a paragraph everything
they did to complete the graph.
