MATH GLOSSARY

bar graph: A graph that uses the height or length of rectangles to compare data. (see sample)

category: One of the groupings used in a system of classification.
 

circle graph: A graph that is used to show how parts make up a whole. (see sample)

data: Information, usually in numerical form.

frequency: The number of times a value occurs in a set of data.

frequency table: A table that organizes data using numbers to show how often something happens.

graph: A drawing that shows a relationship between sets of data.

line graph: A graph used to show a change over time with points connected by line segments.

organize: To put into order.

pictograph: A graph that uses pictures to show data. (see sample)

research: The collecting of information about subject.
 

statistics: Collecting, organizing and studying data in mathematics.

survey: The process of asking a group of people the same question.

table: An organized way to list data.

tally marks: Marks made to keep track of things counted.
