A Quick Study of Buttons

This is a template:  Open this page in Composer by clicking on the File Menu, and choosing the"Edit Page" option.  Then follow the steps one by one.  You will use all the buttons in the botton row, and most of the buttons in the middle row.  When you are finished, you can save, and publish this page.

 

 

Step one: Create a title in the space below these instructions.

1.  Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.

2. Click on the alignment button, and choose centered.

3. Click on Paragraph Style, and Choose Heading 1.  Type your  title in the space below this that you have made..   What you type doesn't matter at this point.  We just want to see a title in Heading 1 format, that is centered on your page.

 

 
 
 
 

Step Two:  Choose a font, Font Size, and Color.

1.  Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.

2.  Click on the font button (actually the little triangle there), and choose Arial.  (Most computers have an Arial font.)

3.  Click on the font size button arrow, and choose size 18.

4.  Click on the Font Color arrow, and choose a color by clicking on the color square of your choice.

5.  Type anything you want.  It should be in size 18, and in the color of your choice.  If you want, make several examples of font size, color, font type, and font alignment.  Use your buttons.

 

 

Step 3:  Bold, Underline, Italics, and Remove all Styles.


1.  Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.
2.  Click the bold button.  Type something. Press the enter key..
3.  Click the Italics button.  Type something.  Press the enter key..
4.  Click the Underline button.  type something.  Press the enter key..
5.  Click the Remove All Styles button.  Type something.

 

Step 3a Highlighting, (or selecting)

1.  Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.

2. Type the word "highlight".

3. Highlight what you just typed by clicking just before or after it. Then, hold down the mouse button and drag across the word so it has a reversed appearance: letters in white and background of the letters dark. Let up on the mouse button, but don't click on the screen anywhere.

4. Click the bold button, then click it again, Notice what happens to your word.

5. Click and reclick the Italics, the Underline, and the Remove all styles buttons. Note the changes in your word.

6. Click on Font and change it, notice what happens to your word.

7. Go to Edit, and click undo to change the font back.
 
 
 
 

Step 4:  Make a Bulleted List.

1.  Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.
2.  Click the bulleted list button.
3.  Type something and press the enter key..
4.  Type something else and press the enter key..
5.  Type something more.
 
 
 

Step 5.  Make a Numbered List.

1.  Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.
2.  Click on the Numbered List button.
3.  Type something and press the enter key..
4.  Type something else and press the enter key..
5.  Type something more.
 
 

Step 6:  Increase Indent, Decrease Indent.

1. Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.
2. Type something.
3  Click on the Increase Indent button.  Press the enter key..
4.  Type something else.
5.  Press the enter key..
6.  Type something else.  Then click on the Decrease Indent button.
 
 
 

Step 7:  In the middle row, click on Spelling.  Check the spelling by following directions.

 

Step 8:  Table button

1.  Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.
2.  Click on the table button.
3.  Make a table that has two rows and two columns.  While you are looking at the table window, notice that you can change table alignments, border widths, background colors, etc. in this window.
4.  Click in each cell of your table, and type something.
 
 
 

Step 9: Horizontal Line

1.  Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.
2.  Click on the H. Line Button three times.
 
 
 
 
 

Step 10:  The Image Button.

1.Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.
2. Click on the image button.
3.  In the image button window, click on the choose file button.
4.  If you can, browse to find an image file to insert.
5.  If you find an image, click OK.  If not, click cancel.
 
 
 
 

Step 11:  Target Button


1. Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.
2.  Click the Target Button.
3.  Type "Target" in the name space of the window.
4.  Notice the  that you have made.
5.  This can be used as a link.  You can make a link to this target, and the link will take you to this part of the page.  That is why it is called a target.
 
 
 

Step 12:  Link Button


1. Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.
2. Click the Link Button.
3.  In the Link Window, in the text box that says "Enter Text to Display for a New Link," you type "Web Institute for Teachers".
4.  In the box that says "Link to a Page location or a local file", you type http://webinstituteforteachers.org.
5.  The link should appear where your cursor is blinking.
6.  Did you notice that in the link window, there is a "Select Named Target" box.  This allows you to choose your target as the link.
 
 

Step 12a:  More Link Button


1. Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.
2.  Type the word "Yahoo".
3.  Highlight Yahoo.
4.  Click the Link Button.
5.  Note that there is no text box for Entering Text to Display for a New Link.  Instead, we have in bold print, the word Yahoo.
6.  In the box that says "Link to a Page location or a local file", you type http://yahoo.com.
7.  You should see the link for Yahoo.
 

Step 13: Find Button.


1.  Click the find button.  \
2.  The window asks for a word or phrase to find.  Type in the words "for Yahoo" without the quotes.
3.  Below that, click the up button.
4.  Then click the find next button.  It should highlight the words "for Yahoo" above.
 
 
 
 

Step 14.  Print Button


This brings up the Print window.
 
 

Step 15.  Cut, Copy, and Paste.


1. Click in the space below these instructions so that the cursor is blinking there.
2. Type the word Yahoo.
3.  Highlight the word you typed.
4.  Click the COPY Button
5. Click in the space below what is highlighted so that the cursor is blinking there.
6.  Click the PASTE Button.  Yahoo should be pasted where your cursor was blinking.
7.  Highlight the Yahoo you just pasted, and click the CUT button.
8.  Click in the space below what is highlighted so that the cursor is blinking there.
9.  Click the PASTE Button.  Yahoo should be pasted where your cursor was blinking.
 

Step 16:  The Preview Button:


1.  Click the Preview Button:  If you file has not been saved, you will be asked to do so.  You should save before you preview.
2.  Click Yes to save your file.
3. The Navigator Window opens to show what your file will look like in the browser.
 

Step 16:  Publish button:  This is covered elsewhere.  It opens the publishing window.

Step 17.  New, Open, and Save are standard software operations.  Make a new file, open a file, and save your file.
