Changing Passwords Using Better Telnet

  1. Click on the Mac HD
  2. Open Applications
  3. Open Internet Applications
  4. Open Better Telnet by double clicking on it.
  5. Go to file and pull down to open connection
  6. In the server box, type in cuip.uchicago.edu
  7. Click connect
  8. At the login prompt, type your username and press enter (or return)
  9. At the password prompt, type in your password and press return
  10. You should see something like this: mmarks@cuip:~>
  11. At the cursor, type passwd ( this is the command to change your password)
  12. At the "(current) unix password" prompt retype your existing password.
  13. At the "new user password" prompt, type in a new password
  14. Retype the new password
  15. If successful, you will see this message: passwd: all authentication tokens updated successfully

(Okay, it worked! It might instead tell you the two times you entered the new password they did not match, so you would start again; or it might reject your choice of new password and explain how to make it more suitable -- again, not too hard to recover from, just try again.)
mmarks@cuip:~> exit (I've got no other tasks to deal with right now, so I type the exit command to end the session.)
13.Type in logout
