Links 4...Targets

What You'll Learn in this Section

Although not necessary for the home page of this
particular classroom web site, you may find that using targets help
your visitors navigate more fluidly. Targets are links to other
parts of the same web page. They allow the user to remain on the
page and to go right to the
section they are interested in without having to scroll down and look through the entire page. So, without further ado, let's learn how to insert and apply targets. |
|
|
Inserting and Applying Targets
|
||
| 1. First thing we have to do is create a target, also known as an anchor. First, click on the area you want to target. For our purposes, click on the image of the cat. | ||
| 2. Click on the "Insert Target"
button |
||

||
| 3. As I have already done, type cat in the empty field. This is the name of your target. Click "OK." An icon of a target should appear next to the cat. This image will not appear on your page when it is published. | ||

||
| 4. Now, this may seem a bit strange, but click below your navigation bar and hit "Enter" approximately 25 times to create some space after the navigation bar. This is simulating what a longer page would be like. | ||
| 5. Type in "Go to Top," then highlight it. | ||
| 6. Click on the "Insert Link" button on the toolbar. A window pops up that looks like this. Notice that "Go to Top" is under "Linked text." | ||

||
| 7. Now you have to select the target you want to link to. As I have already done, click on "cat" in the box under "Select a named target in current page (optional)." The words "#cat" should appear in the field directly above it. | ||
| 8. Click "Apply," then "Close." The words "Go to Top" should now be blue and underlined which means it is linked to the top of the page, right next to the cat. Now, after your page is published, when you click on "Go to Top," you will, well, go to the top of the page. | ||

Congratulations! You're done, finished, finito,
caput, you're outta here! Now what, you say? Well, the fun has just
began. In the next lesson, you will learn how to transfer the web
page you just created onto the CUIP server and, thus, on the web
for the whole world to criticize and ridicule! In the mean time,
ask your mentors what you should do, but feel free to work on your
web site by filling in more of the pages to your liking.

I've added a section here on publishing
in Composer. Ask your mentor if you should go over this, or if you
should go on to learn about FTP.
