Tables III...The Saga Continues

What You'll Learn in this Section

You're going to continue learning about tables by inserting a background color into one of the cells and then making the border invisible to the naked body, er, eye. I meant naked eye.

Inserting a Background Color

  1. First thing you do is select the cell you want to put color in by clicking inside it. For our purposes, click inside the middle right cell.
  2. Click on "Format," then "Table Properties."

  3. If it's not already in front, click on the "Cell" tab.
  4. Click on the gray box next to "Use Color."

A color palette pops up that looks like this.

  5. Click on the color that you want to use.
  6. Click "Apply," which inserts the color into the cell you selected.
  7. Click "Close." Your table should now look something like this.

Making the Border Invisible

Right now, you're table border is exposed and blushing. This is not necessarily a bad thing since some people like this look. Sometimes, however, you may not want your border showing. This is how you make your border disappear.

  1. Select the table in which you want the border to disappear by simply clicking inside of it.
  2. Click on "Format," then select "Table Properties." (Or use the shortcuts above.)
  3. If it's not already in front, select the "Table" tab.
  4. To the right of "Border line width," put a "0" next to "pixels."

  5. Click "Apply." The changes should have been made.
  6. Click "Close." Your table should look something like this. The border has changed to a series of dashed lines, which means that when you put this web page on-line, you will not be able to see the border.

To change it so that you can see the border, repeat the steps above and type in any number (i.e. 1, 3, 5) next to "Border line width."

Before we continue, let's fill in a little more of the text.

  1. Click in the cell in which you changed color and type in your school's name and city.
  2. Highlight what you just typed and change it to the way you want it to look (i.e. bold it, make it larger, change its color). Here's what mine looks like now.

  3. Click in the bottom left cell and type in some sort of welcome.
  4. Again, highlight the text and change its appearance. Here's what mine looks like now.

And here's what my entire table looks like. Keep in mind that it is not to scale
