Pair up. You'll be assigned one of the following search tools:

  1. Altavista
  2. Yahoo
  3. Infoseek (Go)
  4. Google
  5. Open Directory
  6. HotBot
  7. Looksmart
  8. Dogpile
  9. Lycos
  10. Excite

For each, answer the following questions in a WORD document (saved on your desktop) and be prepared to present to the class.:

  • Is it a directory or a search engine, or both. Explain.
  • Is there an advanced search? How does it differ from the regular search.
  • Is there any way of using qualifiers (AND, OR, NOT)? How?
  • Does the search engine recognize quotation marks? How do you know?
  • What types of information are given for "hits."
  • What can you find out about this tool using http://searchenginewatch.com/reports/index.html
  • Do you like this tool? Why or why not?
