Introduction
This is a lesson plan that teaches about African American cultures
and their contributions to society.
Aim
The aim of this lesson is to familiarize people with the African American
Culture, its origins and contributions.
Rationale
The ability to undersstand cultures other than the one you belong to is
an integral component to fostering a world of compassion. Knowledge
predates tolerance and removes the fear associated with ignorance.

The objective of this unit is to help students understand how historical
events have influenced the development of societies worldwide. It also
attempts to help students evaluate factual events to get a clear picture
of how and why cultures interact and the results of these interactions.
Audience
This lesson was designed for teens and pre-teens, but can be adapted to
fit virtually any grade and/or subject area.
Prerequisites
The prerequisites for this lesson are an awareness of the many different
cultures and ethnicities that inhabit the planet earth,
an understanding of how the different cultures interact and develop,
and an open mind.
Subject-Matter
The subject matter that this lesson focuses on is the history of African
Americans. It primarily presents students with an assortment of facts about
African Americans. These facts are then internalized by the student to
help create a broader understanding of other cultures.
Instructional Plan
The teacher has many options with this unit. The instructional strategies
will depend on the instructor. They have the option of having students
research individuals, particular eras, groups and organizations, laws or
particular geographical regions that African Americans have affected.
