LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY

HISTORY

Abraham Lincoln was born Sunday, February 12, 1809, in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was the son of
Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln, and he was named for his paternal grandfather. Thomas Lincoln was a carpenter and
farmer. Both of Abraham's parents were members of a Baptist congregation which had separated from another church due
to opposition to slavery.

LESSONS

A Lesson Using Poetry
Have students read the poem written by Rosemary Benet. Then have them read the "reply poem that follows.

Have students brainstorm Lincoln's accomplishments. Then have them write a "reply" poem
to Benet's. After the poems are written, have students illustrate a scene from Lincoln's
life-then display the poems with their illustrated drawings. This is a wonderful activity!!

Nancy Hanks

If Nancy Hanks
Came back as a ghost,
Seeking news
Of what she loved most,
She'd ask first
"Where's my son?
What's happened to Abe?
What's he done?"
