Introduction

Many elementary and high school students are excused from school to observe holidays.  It is important that students understand why we celebrate

or observe certain holidays.  Completion of this curriculum guide will aid students to understand and appreciate the holidays they are excused from

school.

Aim

This curriculum is designed for teachers of grades 3-5.  The goal is for teachers to utilize this web site for classroom instruction that centers around

school holidays.

Rationale

Most student are not sure why they are out of school.   This site will give teachers activities, lesson and other information that they can use to help

their students better understand the reason for a Holiday.  This site will also help students browse the internet for specific information and a specific

holiday.  Given the different sites, the students can be assessed on the information that can be found on the given sites.

Goals and Objectives

Goals and Objectives can be found on each lesson.  But the overall goal is to give students a fun way of acquring information on all school

Holidays.  The objectives will be reached thru the use of technology, reading, completing cross word puzzles, vocabulary activities, games, etc.  An

additional goal would be that teachers are able to access this information to enhance their own classroom curriculum.

Prerequisites


This curriculum guide assumes that students have primary level reading abilities and basic writing skills.

Subject-Matter

This guide involves integrating technology into the curriculum.  The main focus will be on Social Studies, Language Arts, Music and Art.

Instructional Plan

Upon entering each holiday module, the teacher can obtain and utilize information on the historyof the stated holiday.

Lesson plans can be found that support each holiday, giving hands-on activities and/or reference materials and much more.

The activities section provides a wealth of enriching information that will stimulate and motivate learning.

Assessments can be found at the end of lesson plans and/or in this section evaluating prior knowledge and acquired knowledge.

Puzzles and games can be found in most modules for student enjoyment.

The additional information section can include, but not limited to poetry, art, music, special stories feature, recipes, crafts, printable hand-outs and

much, much more.

Assessment and Evaluation

Assessment and evaluation can be on individual and/or group activity sheets and projects or on the completion of a set of activities and/or projects.

The teacher will use a simple EZ grading scale.  For written activities the teacher will check for grammar and puctuation.  Students can also be

evaluated on oral presentations.  Peer evaluations are also an option.
