The aim of this module is to introduce the WS_FTP program and provide some practice in its use.

Though there is an ftp function in Netscape Composer, an alternate method of transferring files between workstations and server will be useful to WIT participants.

Subject Matter The WS_FTP program.
Prerequisites: Participants need usernames, passwords, and folders created on their workstations for this module.
Learning Objectives Participants will use the WS_FTP program to copy files between their WIT server folders and their WIT workstation folders. They will use other useful features of the program as needed.

The module is intended to be useful as either a group activity with presentation by mentors, or as an individual activity completed independently. There is a presentation file which can be downloaded here, or from the index page. This is mainly intended for use as a group presentation tool. It may be assigned to individuals as needed.
In either case, the methods of navigation presented on the index page should be emphasized. Buttons to go to the next, previous, index (home), and last pages of the module are available on most pages. There is also a jump menu which will take readers to any page in the module.
For experienced computer users, program use will probably be easy. Buttons and activities are easy to understand. Probably independent completion of the module will suffice. Time estimate: 20 minutes.
For beginners, mentor presentation may be most beneficial. Time estimate: 40 minutes or more.
The module uses buttons to proceed page by page through page 9. Page 9 contains an image map showing locations of program buttons. Clicking on a button or arrows opens a new browser page which explains the function of the button clicked. One of the images on these new pages is a copy of the program help file explanation.
Participants should open the WS_FTP program as they begin the module, and as they read about procedures and features described in the module, they should experiment with them in the program. Finally, they should do the tutorial linked on the last page of the module, which provides practice moving files via ftp.
