Subject: [Wit-l] Don't forget the "www" when you publish in Composer!
Reply-To: wit-l@cuip.uchicago.edu

A number of people are forgetting that the URL for the Publish function in
Composer is

 ftp://cuip.uchicago.edu/home/USERNAME/www/

and the only use as far as home/USERNAME.  The files DO get successfully
uploaded, but you won't see them anywhere in the Navigator browser.  Only
files in the www folder (or in some subfolder under that) show up when you
use a browser and look in

 http://cuip.uchicago.edu/~USERNAME

(And why is "that"? Because people do some things with their computer
accounts besides publish web pages, so they need a way to distinguish what
they want the web server to publish from what they don't want to share with
the whole world.  The way that has evolved is to distinguish that by where
a file is located, with a designated location for each user being shown by
the web server.  Besides "www", some systems use "html" or "public_html".)

Anyway, the moral of the story:  Don't forget the "www" when you publish
in Composer!

Mitch
