Courage
Knots on a Counting Rope
by Bill Martin, Jr., and John Archambault, illustrated by Ted Rand.

A blind Indian boy learns from his grandfather to "see with his heart" and gains self-confidence in this poignant story of love and courage. A Reading Rainbow book.

The Review
"Tell me the story again. Tell me who I am," said the boy. The grandfather begins the story . . . "Once there was a boy child . . ." This story tells of the birth of Boy-Strength-of-Blue-Horses . . . "he was born on a dark night when a wild storm came out of the mountains crying Boy-eeeeeeeee!" His first horse . . . "the sun came through the clouds, the foal was born, and a rainbow danced across the sky," and an exciting horse race. . . "the people said who is that boy riding bareback racing with all of his heart?" This beautifully illustrated and well-told story is one of my all-time favorites. I love to share it with my students.

The Activity

Play a Native American game. For Feather Race you will need 1 feather. Line up at a starting line with your feathers. At the signal, each player blows his or her feather in the air while going toward the finish line. If the feather falls, the player picks it up where it lands and continues to the finish line.

Interview a parent or relative and have them tell you the story of the your birth.
