AIM

Our learners will employ an interdisciplinary web-based module to incorporate cultural awareness and economic analysis skills as they travel through the Hispanic world.

RATIONALE

We find ourselves today submerged in a mass of cultural diversity with a wide range of economic repercussions.  The primary minority influence in our society will be The Hispanic Culture.  We need to become more aware of cultural differences and their influence on the economy of our Hispanic neighbors as well as our own country.

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN

STUDENTS will explore cultural and economic issues and how they relate to each other in the hispanic world using the INTERNET.  They will find information by taking a trip to various countries.

        Reasons for using the Internet are:

    allows students to find current information
    allows students to research more authentic information
    allows students to work in teams, at their own pace and at different times
    allows students to develop computer skills
    allows other parties (peers, teachers, parents) to participate

        Teacher's Role:

    explain the rationale for the module and give the necessary instructions
    serve as a facilitator to the students throughout the activities
    guide students as they navigate the WEB
    monitor and evaluate progress throughout the project
    make the final assessment

        Students' Role

    be responsible for their own learning
    work collaboratively and cooperatively
    complete activities and project according to time line
    communicate with teacher as they progress
    review final assessment

AUDIENCE

The learners involved will be students from Roberto Clemente High School and Adlai Stevenson High Schools.  They will be studying International Business and the Hispanic culture.

ACTIVITIES

Students will study a target country using the INTERNET resources. They will analyze their findings by using either a business, a tourist, or a visionary perspective.  To guide them in this journey, they will . . .

form teams for project
choose a country and locate information regarding continent and the country's borders
research economic resources in target country
find what products or services the target country trades
find that country's political system, issues, conflicts
currency, capital, population

What are 5 basic cultural patterns that we see in this country?
What are 3 economic issues that are evident?
What are the relationship or interconnection between culture and economic issues
What conclusions can you draw?
What recommendations will you give to another business person? tourist? or
What changes would you make in that country if you are a visionary?

ASSESSMENT

Upon completion of this web-based-module, students will prepare a class presentation consisting of the following:

facts about the research
comparing and contrasting information
presenting cultural and economic issues
making constructive recommendations based on the information gathered in the project, and from the point of view of a business persona tourist, or  a visionary

Students must have a well-organized written report of their findings.
