Northern region

The Galilee, or Galil in Hebrew, Israel's northern region, is also its most feritle.  The valey of Yizrael is rich with green fields, and the mountains are covered with forest.  The Galil is filled with sites of great significance to the Jewish nation and it combines the lessons of the past with the promise of the future. At the basin of the Galil is the beautiful Kinneret, a violin shaped lake surrounded by the historical city of Tiberias on its west shores and the Golan Heights on the east.  The Kineret is the main resevoir of water of the state. The Jordan Rivercarries the water from the Kinneret to the rest of the country.
The Golan Heights, on the east of the Kinneret Lake became again a part of the State of Israel after the Six Day War, in 1967.  Until then it was part of Syrian territory.  From 1967 till today the Golan was developed into a flourishing region.
Kibbutz -  There are many ways people chose to live in the Galil.  There are towns, Movashvinm (agricultural settlements) and Kibbutzim  (plural for Kibbutz). THE KIBBUTZ is a  communal way of living unique to Israel.  It was established by the Jewish pioneers who left their city homes in Europe and came to a desolate land in the turn of the 20th century to start a new life.  These city dwellers became farmeres.  they buitl a society that believes in sharing everything-- from profits to decision making to living arrangements.  There are 270 Kibbutizim in Israel, many of which are in the Galil.  The first Kibbutz, Degania, is at the shores of Lake Kinneret and the Jordan River.

Galil-Golan Activity

1) You are hiking in the Galil!  (Lucky you...)  There are many things you'd like to do.  Where would you go?

It is a hot day. (How unusual for Israel...).  It is particularly hot now because you are in the Valley of Yizrael.  Where should you go to take a dip in one of the world's most famous natural spas?  Go to the Galil Info Center to find the information and then Click on the best answer!

3) Where are you?

Look at the map of the Eastern Galil and the Golan Heights.   The nearest place on your north is the city of Zefat (Sefad) ;  on your east you can see the blue water of the Kinneret (Lake Tiberias); across the lake, to your west, you can see the homes of Kibbutz En Gev and  and beyond that the beautiful Golan Heights.  Where in the world are you standing?

  • Qazrin- the main city of the Golan
  • Tiberias-  The ancient city on the east shores of the Kinneret
  • Golan Beach- on the west shore of the Kinneret

  • 4) Who are you?

You belong to a group of settlers who decide to go live on the Golan even though Jews have not lived there for many years.  You and your group purchase a piece of land and name the place Golan BeBashan and settle there.  A year later your group buys another piece of land from the Bedouins and builds another settlement there.  Unfortunately, some years later your entire group is forced to leave the Golan because of  Arab riots.  What is the name of your group?

Hint, hint:  This happened at the end of the 19th century.
