Curriculum Module Components - Creating Simple Web Pages

AIM

The aim of the Creating Simple Web Pages module is to guide teachers in the development of simple web pages that integrate the use of the Internet as a tool to produce engaging, exciting lessons for their students. The teacher will create a personal homepage and a three-page Web curriculum module that incorporates basic Web page structure and principles of curriculum development.

RATIONALE

As we enter the new millenium, it is no secret that the Internet will remain a viable, powerful resource in the educational arena.

Teachers and students will be expected to know how to navigate the World Wide Web and to use the Internet to enhance engaged learning in the curriculum. The Internet provides enormous amounts of information that are designed specifically for students and teachers. Therefore, the Internet should not be used to simply gather information, but it should be used as a tool to promote critical thinking. The Internet can encourage communication and collaboration among students and teachers via online projects and other activities that promote engaged learning. By learning to create simple Web pages, teachers can design online activities that incorporate Internet resources, thereby, producing lessons that meets the individual needs of their students.

OBJECTIVES
1. The teacher will be introduced to basic HTML terminology.

2. The teacher will learn to create a simple Web page that contains a variety of font styles and colors, images, links (text and image), lists (ordered and unordered), and tables.

3. The teacher will learn the basic features of Netscape Composer Web page editor and how to retrieve their Web pages using Netscape Navigator.

4. The teacher will learn to incorporate Internet resources into a Web page to create online activities for students.

PREREQUISITES: Teachers should have basic computer literacy, including knowledge of file management, word processing skills, and browsers. It is also expected that teachers will have a basic understanding of theories of learning and principles of curriculum development.

AUDIENCE: This module is intended for teachers at any grade level who plan to use the Internet to support teaching and learning in the classroom and to design online activities, in an effort to meet this challenge.

SUBJECT MATTER: The module will consist of the following major sections:

  • An introduction to basic HTML tags, basic Web page structure, and Netscape Composer features
  • Creating simple Web pages that contain different styles, colors, and sizes of font; images; text and image links; and an ordered and unordered lists.
INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN

Teachers will complete all assignments/projects online. The module should be completed in the following order:

MATERIALS:
Students must have access to the Internet, Netscape Navigator browser, a word processing program, and diskettes.

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION:

Assessment and evaluation will be ongoing. All teachers will complete several activities and create Web pages to demonstrate their knowledge of Web page design. Students will also take an online test covering that covers creating basic Web pages using Netscape Composer.
