Safety
Before beginning your classroom instruction on Search
engines, you need to set some ground rules for Internet Safety. One
way is by developing an Acceptable Use Contract.
This contract should outline all of the acceptable rules and regulations
for accessing the internet, as well as making the student responsible for
his/her actions if the student do access inappropriate material, or risk
personal safety.
These "rules of the road" should be developed with the students, written down, signed by the students, parents/guardian and teacher, and prominently posted near the computer. Like any rules, these guidelines must also carry penalties for violation of the contract.
Supervision
Student use of the Internet should always be supervised.
However, if you plan to give special independent privileges, take into
consideration the student's age, behavior, work habits, and familiarity
with your Acceptable Use Contract.
Independent use of the Internet should be given thoughtful consideration
before being allowed.
Directed activities of the internet are also important
in the safe use of the Internet. Surfing presents the opportunity
for students to find inappropriate material. The purpose of this
Acceptable
Use Contract is to give your students a specific purpose
and plan when going online, and to help ensure a positive engaging learning
experience.
