WATER

In the cloud forest of Ecuador, we had to worry about a commodity that we take for granted in Chicago, water.  Not only did we have to worry about how much water we used, but if the water was potable, or drinkable. During our stay at the research station, we got our water the faucet, just like we do at home, but before drinking the water we had to boil it first.

Why do you think we had to boil the water?

When we took a shower, we had to get wet, turn off the water while we were washing, and then turn the water back on in order to rinse.

Why do you think we had to turn the water off?

In order to understand the importance of conserving water, we must start at the beginning. What is water and where does it come from?

Water is the all purpose molecule. Not only are our cells made up of 70% water, but most of life's molecules dissolve and transport very easily in water.  Click on the link below to find out more about the properties of water and the main sources.

Helpful Hint: You might want to take a look at the Water Quiz while you're visiting the site, for you will be asked very similar questions at the end of this unit. Maybe even take the quiz to see just how much you know.

Chemistry and Water

After exploring the links and any other resources you might have available in the classroom, participating in classroom activities and experiments, your task is to create a water brochure or flip chart.

Procedures

1. Research
Focus: What are the basic properties of water?
            Where does water come from?
            What is the water cycle?
You need to use at least 3 types of sources
    (Internet, Texts, Encyclopedias)

2. Notes
Write information in your own words
Record where you got your information to use for your bibliography
    Stay organized
How to take notes on line

3. Organize Information
Use outline form, venn diagrams,or webs to organize information

4. Rough Draft
    turn notes to sentences
    preliminary layout

5. Revise
Ask a friend or family member to edit your rough draft

6. Final Draft
