In 1950, Communist-controlled North Korea invaded South Korea. In order to intervene in the spread of communism, the United Nations requested members to provide military aid to South Korea. Sixteen nations sent troops, including the United States. The war lasted three years and claimed many lives, including more than 33,000 Americans.
