Art Criticism: A Four Step Process

When most people think of 'criticism," they think immediately of the word and its negative connotations. To criticize is to "find fault with," according to one definition in the Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary. The other definition, however, is "to consider the merits and demerits of and judge accordingly: to evaluate." The second definition of criticism is whence the activity art criticism is derived. To criticize an artwork (be it a movie, a play, a painting, or a photograph) is to examine both the form and the function of the piece closely and determine if the artwork accomplishes what the artist set out to do.
