(The same contents are also available over the Internet at either of the following URLs: http://cuip.uchicago.edu/software/cuip-cd/ ftp://cuip.uchicago.edu/software/cuip-cd/ ) If you have suggestions or requests for the contents of the next issue, please mention them to your CUIP TRA, or email them to cuip-tech@cuip.uchicago.edu . The emphasis here is on Windows programs, but there are some Macintosh programs as well. The organization of the folders reflects this emphasis, as Windows program folders are presented right at top level organized by topic or program (without a "WINDOWS" folder), while all Mac program folders are inside the MAC folder. CONTENTS Here is the uncommented list of files, in forward-slash notation: ADOBE/ar405eng.exe CLIPBRD-CACHE/ClipCachePlus.exe CLIPBRD-CACHE/clipc21a.exe Contents-and-Instructions.txt (this file) DSKTP-BKGRNDS/*.bmp EUDORA/Eudora43.exe EUDORA/eul306.exe FTP/cutftp32.exe FTP/ws_ftp32.zip NETSCAPE/cc32e472.exe OPERA/o362e32.exe SENDTOX/sendtox.dll SENDTOX/sendtox.inf TESTPILOT/installdb.exe TIME/d4time41.zip TIME/saytime.zip TREESIZE/treesize.zip WINZIP/winzip70.exe MAC/ADOBE/ar405eng.bin MAC/ADOBE/ar405eng.hqx MAC/EUDORA/eudora_431_Installer.bin MAC/NETSCAPE/Comm4_72_Complete_EX.bin MAC/TESTPILOT/macOSdb.sit MAC/TESTPILOT/macosdb.hqx INSTRUCTIONS Below is a list of the contents (given in the format of Windows paths, with the assumption that your CD ROM drive has drive letter E), with comments or instructions where needed. E:\ADOBE\ar405eng.exe Acrobat Reader, v. 4.05. Free. Run this file (double-click) to install. E:\CLIPBRD-CACHE\clipc21a.exe E:\CLIPBRD-CACHE\ClipCachePlus.exe Older and newer versions (with different trial periods) of Clip Cache, a shareware program with a trial period. Saves things you have copied/cut to the clipboard, so that a subsequent selection does not entirely wipe them out. Run either file to install. Accept the suggestion of putting in your Startup group. Suggestion: configure hotkeys Ctrl-Alt-UpArrow and Ctrl-Alt-Down as quick-select-up and quick-select-down. E:\DSKTP-BKGRNDS\*.bmp Just for fun. Backgrounds from the NT workstation setup, expanding the options you have for desktop decor :). Copy to (typically) C:\Windows\, then open the Display control panel to the Background tab to find them listed as choices. E:\EUDORA\eul306.exe E:\EUDORA\Eudora431.exe (( NOTE: DO NOT RUN Eudora431.exe OVER EARLIER EUDORA PRO. Insterad, use an updater from Qualcomm, which will give you the opportunity to obtain a code to put 4.31 into paid mode. )) Run either executable to install, then configure for the user's email account. The eul306.exe is "classic" free Eudora Light, as distributed prior to March 2000. It will handle one user's account, with some useful tools and options (but not as many as Eudora Pro), and no annoying advertisements. The Eudora43.exe is the multi-mode installer that Eudora instituted in March 2000. The Light Mode takes the place of Eudora Light -- free, handles one account, limited features, and one annoying advertisement. The Paid Mode takes the place of Eudora Pro -- costs something, handles multiple accounts, has many advanced features, and does not annoy you with advertisements. The Sponsored Mode fits in between those two: it is free, it handles multiple accounts and all features, but has multiple advertisements. Eudora43.exe installs in Sponsored Mode. You can switch between Sponsored and Light at will, from the Help menu. With payment and a registration number, you can switch to Paid mode. E:\FTP\cutftp32.exe E:\FTP\ws_ftp32.zip Two FTP programs. WS FTP is free, Cute-FTP costs something and this is a trial-period program. To install Cute, run this executable. To install WS, extract this Zip archive (using WinZip, PKzip, or another utility that handles this format), then run the Install.exe included in the pack; answer the questions correctly to get the free use -- you are using this only at school and only for educational purposes. E:\NETSCAPE\cc32e472.exe Full Communicator for Windows, version 4.72. To install, run this executable. E:\OPERA\o362e32.exe Opera, an alternative browser, with an installer that still fits on a single diskette! This is a 30-days-of-use trial version. You may find Opera useful when needing a quick-and-dirty (though actually it's clean:) way to connect to some web site, e.g. when MSIE refuses to connect to Netscape's home site. E:\SENDTOX\sendtox.dll E:\SENDTOX\sendtox.inf This was originally one of the Microsoft-issued "Power Toys" that came out to improve Windows 95 in little ways before the Windows 98 era. (I don't know whether this works with 98.) The aspect this one will tweak is the "Send To" submenu that appears within the Context menu that opens when you right-click on a file icon. In the unmodified system, this Send To menu has something like two entries, to send the file to the A: drive, or to email. This tweak does two things: (a) It directly adds three new entries to that menu, "[Send To] Clipboard As Contents" (an item of questionable value, since it drowns your clipboard in potentially huge file contents), and "[Send To] Clipboard As Name", an item of great value which allows you to get a filepath as text which can be pasted all sorts of useful places! The last addition is AnyFolder, which lets you browse or specify a file path -- basically this allows moving a file without having two windows open (source and destination) or using Windows Explorer. (b) It makes a directory C:\Windows\SendTo (which may instead be in individual Profiles on multi-user login machines), where you then add application shortcuts which will appear in the Send To menu. Useful choices might be Notepad, Wordpad, or your own email application (the original email send-to looks for Microsoft messaging only). TO INSTALL: Right click on the sendtox.inf file, and select Install or Active Install. This will install the dll file in some system folder, and will create the SendTo folder. You add shortcuts to desired applications into the SendTo folder. E:\TESTPILOT\installdb.exe See http://www.clearlearning.com/ for a description of the Test Pilot online assessment system. The server-side part of the system is available on cuip.uchicago.edu, by special arrangement with Clear Learning Software. Please see your CUIP TRA or write to cuip-tech@cuip.uchicago.edu for help in getting a reserved folder for uploading your online tests and surveys, and using the authoring software. The installdb.exe file is the installer for the Windows version of the authoring program. Install by running this executable. Then you run the installed program to create the excellent, multi-featured, flexible online tests or surveys Test Pilot provides. The authoring program produces an external file containing specs for your test, which then is uploaded to cuip.uchicago.edu where it can be run online by the special servlet. E:\TIME\d4time41.zip A program for keeping your computer's clock accurate, by contacting a time server on the internet. To install: unpack the Zip archive (using WinZip, PKzip, or another utility that handles this format); read extracted file Readme.txt; right-click on extracted file D4.inf and select Install. Start the program (from your Start -> Programs -> Startup group) and configure it. The check interval can be expanded to an hour or two; the maximum adjustment without alert *should* definitely be lowered, to maybe one minute. We suggest also checking Run Hidden. E:\TIME\saytime.zip Heh. If you have sound, this will have the time of day spoken aloud, at regular intervals and/or when you click an icon in the system tray. (This was also among the Windows 95 Power Toys.) To install: unpack the Zip archive (using WinZip, PKzip, or another utility that handles this format); read the extracted file Readme.txt; right-click on extracted file Saytime.inf and select Install. E:\TREESIZE\treesize.zip Another really great utility for the tech coordinator or anyone who needs to manage Windows 95 computers with disks or partitions that are close to full. (Windows 98 and NT Workstation incorporate a facility like this one into the OS.) This tells you the total amount of file space occupied under a particular node in the filesystem, i.e. in that folder together with all its subfolders. In a Windows-Explorer-like presentation this lets you see exactly what's eating up your space, and exactly where you can go to free up the amount you need. To install: unpack the Zip archive (using WinZip, PKzip, or another utility that handles this format); read the extracted file Readme.txt, or if you prefer German, the Liesmich.txt file; then right-click on extracted file Treesize.inf and select Install. E:\WINZIP\winzip70.exe A trial version of the popular utility for creating and unpacking Zip archives. Run the executable to install. E:\MAC\ADOBE\ar405eng.bin E:\MAC\ADOBE\ar405eng.hqx Two different packagings of Acrobat Reader 4.05 for the Macintosh. E:\MAC\EUDORA\eudora_431_Installer.bin The installer for the Macintosh version of Eudora 4.3. See above for a discussion of the "modes" in Eudora 4.3. NOTE: for a subsequent issue we'd like to include a Macintosh version of good-old Eudora Light, in some version 3.x. E:\MAC\NETSCAPE\Comm4_72_Complete_EX.bin Netscape Communicator Complete, v. 4.72 for Mac. E:\MAC\TESTPILOT\macOSdb.sit E:\MAC\TESTPILOT\macosdb.hqx See discussion above for information on Test Pilot. these are two different packagings of the authoring program for Macintosh.
