Education and Electronic Mail

Educational Uses of E-mail

With electronic mail you and your students can, send and receive e-mail, send and receive files and pictures, or subscribe to topic based mailing lists or listservs. It is awesome to think, that through the power of telecommunication, you have direct access to anyone in the world with an e-mail address. The possibilities are practically endless. Class or individual key-pals (Internet lingo for pen-pals) are an excellent use of this electronic resource. You can even display a world map and mark the origin of all the mail you and your class receive.

Using e-mail you can write anyone in the world who has an e-mail address, irregardless of what type of computers you have or what Internet Service provider you use. There are no extra charges for sending e-mail messages long distances. Usually e-mail is transferred very rapidly to whomever it is sent to. Many web sites have e-mail addresses where you can contact someone who works with the web site. Other web sites allow you to give your e-mail address to receive information you are interested in. An example of a site that will e-mail you additional information based upon your interests is the Classroom Connect Infobot. Check out the documents on the infobot and send one that interests you to your e-mail account. Another site that is mostly for entertainment purposes allows you to send electronic greeting cards over e-mail. There are many companies that offer this service at no charge, including Hallmark Cards. Try sending one of these to yourself or a friend.

Using Listservs as an Educational Tool

Listservs are mailing lists which allow a number of individuals to share information on a given topic. They are interactive because any member can read and write posts to the list at any time. There are thousands of lists to choose from and they cost nothing to join.

To subscribe to a list send a message to the administrative address. The body of the message should say: subscribe "exact name of list" "your name". You will soon receive a message back from the list telling you the general list guidelines, how to post messages, and how to unsubscribe. Make sure you save this message for further reference.
