HISTORY
FAIR

A special thanks to all students and teachers who participated in the Rachel Carson History Fair. This year we had well over 200 contestants. We are still tabulating the results. The final outcome will be announced by mid-April. There will be prizes given at each grade level. The winners will be honored at the year end awards assembly.

This year grades 4 through 8 participated.

4th and 5th graders wrote biographies

6th, 7th, and 8th graders picked their favorite topic and attempted to show how their topic changed over time.

Book Fair
We've organized a Spring Book Fair to coincide with report card pick-up. Brochures and letters will be sent home shortly.

Sandra Cisneros

Sandra Cisneros, famous Latino Author, (The House on Mango Street ) visited our school in March.

She visited the pre-school and read her new offering to the students. Ms. Resendiz and the bilingual department sponsored the visit. Some students from the Chavez school were also on hand to greet this cheerful and captivating author.(see newspaper article)

Debbi Chocolate

Attention! Attention! Third grade students and parents, Debbi Chocolate, author of a number of Scholastic children's books is coming to our school on April 9, 1998. Parents and students of our five third grade classrooms will be treated to an assembly, with a personal reading of Imani in the Belly. Later students will get a writer's workshop visit from Ms. Chocolate in their classrooms. She is sponsored by Ms. Owens, Ms. Cieciel, and The Printer's Row Book Fair Council.

The pre-school parents are working on an album quilt which will be presented at the formal Primary School Dedication on May 27, 1998. The quilt will depict favorite book titles and/or characters the pre-schoolers and their parent's have shared.
